Marseille → Aix: everything you need to know

Distance, duration, rates, alternatives, time slots to avoid — the complete guide to travelling between the two cities by private chauffeur.

01 Distance and duration

Marseille city centre – Aix-en-Provence city centre: 31 km via the A51 motorway, approximately 35 to 45 minutes depending on traffic. During off-peak hours (mid-morning, afternoon outside rush hour), you're closer to 30 minutes. During peak hours (7:30–9:00, 17:00–19:00), allow 50 minutes or more, especially approaching Aix where the Arc roundabout can become a bottleneck.

Alternative via the D8n (old road): longer (~40 km), but sometimes faster when the A51 is congested. This is exactly the kind of decision the driver makes in real time based on GPS traffic data.

02 VTC rate

By sedan: approximately 62 €. By van (8 seats): approximately 100 €. These rates are indicative (daytime, private hire, excluding public holidays). The exact price is calculated directly when you book online — and it is fixed, whatever happens on the road.

Note: the VTC rate is independent of journey duration. If traffic extends your travel time by 20 minutes, the price doesn't change. It's the opposite of a metered taxi, where every traffic jam makes the meter run.

03 Alternatives to VTC

TER: ~35 min, ~8 € — the most economical. But you need to get to the station, wait for the right train, and arrange transport on arrival (Aix city station is off-centre, the TGV station even more so). Not suitable with luggage or for families.

Cartreize Bus: ~30 min, ~6 € — regular but variable occupancy, and limited stops. No pick-up from your home.

Personal car: parking in Aix is a challenge (historic centre is almost entirely pedestrianised, underground car parks often full). And returning after an evening out requires a sober driver.

VTC: door-to-door, fixed rate, zero parking hassle, van option for groups. The premium choice when comfort and punctuality matter more than ticket price.

04 Timing tips

Times to avoid: 7:30–9:00 (Marseille → Aix direction, commuter traffic) and 17:00–19:00 (return). Friday evening is the worst slot of the week — departures for weekends to the Lubéron and the Côte d'Azur.

Smooth traffic slots: 10:00–12:00, 14:00–16:00, after 20:00. Sunday is generally smooth in both directions.

The driver adjusts the pickup time based on the time slot to guarantee your arrival time — this is included in the service.
